What are the Different Types of Pit Bulls?
As we have previously established, pit bulls consists of several similar, yet different breeds. Despite their similarities, such as bulky heads, they each are different breeds with distinct characteristics. This post delves into the facts regarding the four main types of pit bulls: American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers.
1. American Pit Bull Terrier
The American Pit Bull Terrier, also known as APBT is a medium-sized dog breed that is well known for loyalty toward its owners. It's a crossbreed of English bulldogs and terriers developed in the 1800s. Even though American Pit Bull Terriers were initially bred for fighting, hunting, and farming, they hold a wide range of critical jobs today. The American Pit Bull Terriers are extremely friendly with their families and give unconditional love with loyalty.
However, APBTs can be prone to separation anxiety and require early training and socialization to build their tolerance to be left alone for longer periods. As far as the health status of these dogs is concerned, they are prone to certain diseases, including Hip dysplasia, congenital heart disease, Luxating patella, Skin problems and allergies, Cataracts, Ear infections, and many others.
2. American Staffordshire Terrier
The American Staffordshire Terrier (AmStaff, American Staffy, Staffy) closely resembles the APBT, but they have a distinct appearance and tend to be more compact in size. Another distinction between AmStaffs and APBTs are that AmStaffs are recognized by the American Kennel Club, where APBTs are not. American Staffies are equally as loyal to their owners. While American Staffordshire Terriers also have a history of being bred for bull baiting and dog fighting, they are now widely used for several purposes, including as military, farming dogs, and as therapy or service animals. The AmStaff is usually a healthy dog breed with a lifespan of 14 years, but unfortunately, they can also be prone to certain health conditions such as Congenital heart disease, Hip dysplasia, Elbow dysplasia, Luxating patella, Spondylosis, Skin problems, allergies, thyroid, and many others.
3. Staffordshire Bull Terrier
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier (Staffy Bull) is an older dog breed, and the AKC and UKC both also recognize them. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is well known for its smiling appearance and kind nature. The original roots of this breed belong to the bulldog, but his history is quite similar to APBT and AmStaffs. Staffordshire Bull Terriers are an intelligent dog breed, but they’re not easy to train, so they require a strong and firm leader.
Staffy Bulls also need proper socialization and interaction with other dogs and strangers to prevent the development of aggression. The average lifespan of this dog breed is around 12-14 years, so overall it's a healthy dog. However, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is also prone to health issues such as L-2-Hydroxyglutaric Aciduria, Elbow dysplasia, Hip dysplasia, Cataracts, Luxating patella, and many others.
4. The American Bulldog
The American Bulldog is one of the most well-known dog breeds. It was initially used for farming, but has grown more popular as a family dog. American Bulldogs are extremely loyal and protective towards their homes and humans. Compared to other breeds we discussed earlier, the American Bull Dog is very easy to train and responds well to positive training methods. The history of the American Bulldog goes back to the 1700s. They were developed to fulfill various societal roles, such as catch dog, guardian, and herder.
The average lifespan of an American Bulldog is around 10 to 15 years depending upon the lifestyle and diet. There are also some noticeable health concerns regarding the American Bulldog, such as Hip Dysplasia, Degenerative myelopathy, Deafness, Hyperuricosuria, Itchyosis, Cherry eye, and many others. Remember that American BullDog requires daily exercise with a family member. The American Bulldog should not be left alone in the backyard to burn off their energy.
