types of dog training

Different types of dog training are important because they cater to various needs, temperaments, and goals of both dogs and their owners. Each type of training focuses on specific aspects of a dog's behavior and development, and choosing the right approach can lead to a well-behaved, happy, and well-adjusted canine companion.

In this blog post we discuss a 10 of many types of dog training and why they’re important:

  1. Obedience Training

Obedience training emphasizes strengthening a dog’s understanding and ability to perform desired behaviors on command. Obedience training is one of the most common types of training and is usually what people are referring to when they refer to pet dog training. Basic obedience commands include sit, down, stay, come, heel, drop it, leave it, place, etc

2. Exposure/Socialization-focused Training

Socialization-focused training guides the majority of our programs. The idea behind exposure/socialization training is that the more a dog is exposed to different environments and can practice expectation in those environments, the more likely they are to display those behaviors consistently. 3. Pack Training

3. Pack Training

Pack training emphasizes the process where dogs learn from other dogs. Dog trainers who use the pack model usually focus on placing together dogs based on their strengths and weaknesses and allowing dogs to teach and learn from each other naturally through the process of existing within a pack as opposed to displaying commands on cue

4. Day Training

Day training is a type of training where a dog trainer directly trains your dog during the day and then sends the dog home with their family at the end of the day.

5. Protection Training

Protection training involves the formal process of teaching dogs to protect their owners or property. Although some dogs are natural protectors due to their genes and breed traits, they will still require formal protection training to be reliable and not a liability. Protection trained dogs must have strong genetics and a stable temperament.

6. Service Dog Training

Service Dog Training refers to the specialized training for service dogs and their handler which includes basic obedience training, public access training, and task training

7. Puppy Training

Puppy training is specific to dogs under the age of 4 month and includes the process of teaching them the foundation of how they’re expected to behave in different situations.

8.Public Access Training

Public access training refers to the preparation that dogs receive who will be entering public spaces often. This includes learning to exist calmly and hold a neutral (vs. outgoing or reactive) temperament. Many of the previously mentioned types of dog training encompass public access training.

9. Competition Training

Dog owners who participate in competitions, such as rally or obedience will engage in competition training to learn and teach their dogs the rules and expectations of the competition space.

10. Show Training

Dogs who compete in dog shows for conformation usually engage in show training, where they learn the expectations of the show ring, they learn how to stack, and how to best show off just how much their conform to their breeds standard
