how to teach your pit bull to sit
Just got a new pit bull puppy or adult dog who needs some training? Sit is likely the first command you will teach your dog and it is the easiest. Teaching your dog to sit can be used to stop bad behaviors in their tracks in an emergency until you scale up to more advanced training and communication.
The following steps will guide you through teaching your dog to sit using one specific technique. I recommend hand feeding your dog versus using a bowl initially until their training is complete.
During your dog’s meal time, take some of their kibble into the palm of your hand, hold it over their head and say “sit.”
Once your dog sits, mark with an emphatic “yes!” and give them the food. Do not give them any food for jumping or any other behavior other than a sit. Be patient and wait. And try your best not to only say the command once.
Repeat this for several repetitions or until the food is gone.
Repeat the above steps daily at each meal, until your dog fully grasps the sit command. As your dog comes to fully understand the sit command, you can slowly begin phasing out using treats.
