Whether it’s jumping, barking, growling, lunging on leash, or crying in the crate, we’ve all experienced undesired behavior from our dogs that seem unsolvable. It’s even more difficult when your dog is a pit bull or bully breed because of the stigma and likelihood that people will judge, stereotype, or consider your dog aggressive, even when they are displaying behaviors typical of any dog.

Housing Discrimination Advocacy
Housing Discrimination occurs when a person experiences additional barriers to securing housing because of judgment, stereotyping, and prejudice towards them because of who they are and how they live. Housing discrimination is commonly experienced by pit bull families and owners because of public perceptions about pit bulls and breed specific legislation and breed restrictions which indiscriminately considers all dogs classified as pit bulls to be inherently aggressive and threatening regardless of their individual characteristics.
How The Pit Bull Doctor Can Help: We advocate for pit bull families experiencing housing discrimination, threats of eviction, landlord harassment or mistreatment, or other unnecessary challenges acquiring housing because of their pit bull or bully breed’s breed through consultations, landlord and HOA letters, and expert client witness services.
public access Discrimination Advocacy
Public access discrimination is primarily experienced by service dogs and their handlers when they are unjustly denied access to public spaces (restaurants, grocery stores, transportation systems, etc), they are mistreated while in public spaces, or they are wrongfully asked to leave a public space despite their legal right to be there. However, public access discrimination is also commonly experienced by parents and owners of pit bulls and bully breeds when they are not allowed access to services and spaces accessible to other dog breeds on the basis of their breed without consideration of the individual dog.
How The Pit Bull Doctor Can Help: We advocate for fair public access for our clients through consultations about the incident, discussion of your rights, assistance with filing complaints or pro-se lawsuits when applicable (without a lawyer), and contacting companies on behalf of clients who were wrongfully denied access or mistreated.

When Dr. Megan (The Pit Bull Dr.) made the decision to bring a pit bull type dog (American Staffordshire Terrier) into her life, she couldn’t have imagined the transformation that would result. Suddenly, she became aware of the ways that policies like breed restrictions, breed specific legislation, and breed discrimination limited her options for safe, equitable housing without any consideration of her dog Justice’s actual personality or behavior. Justice was immediately written off and deemed “aggressive,” “vicious,” or “potentially dangerous” because of her breed and classification as a pit bull. Despite Justice’s certifiably friendly and outgoing temperament and the extensive training Dr. Megan completed with Justice, in navigating housing, Megan and Justice were still subjected to breed discrimination policies disguised as home owner’s insurance breed restrictions.
Dr. Megan immediately noticed the similarities in the ways all pit bull type dogs were treated and the ways Black people have historically been treated in America. Often, groups of people are also written off as unworthy of safe housing and stereotyped as aggressive without any consideration of their actual personality. This realization ignited Dr. Megan’s passion for not only overcoming the discrimination, stereotyping and mistreatment she faced with Justice, but to support other people facing those same barriers who may not have the same ability to advocate for themselves. She noticed additional injustices upon later completing the extensive training for Justice to become her service dog. Still, despite Justice’s extensive training, she was still often denied access to public spaces or had to endure glares and negative comments about whether or not she “looked like a service dog”.

Instead of prescribing medication, as a Doctor of Philosophy, Dr. Megan prescribes solutions to your behavior, housing, or public access issues. We are experts in addressing the social problems experienced by people who prefer pit bulls as companion pets or assistance animals.
